In preparation for 2010 Expo, Shanghai municipal government is expected to finish the bus replacement project before the Expo raises its curtains. Before May 1, 2010, on which the Expo will kick off officially, Shanghai will replace 4,000 buses, thus over 50% of the city’s bus fleet will become environmentally friendly and be able to meet National Ⅲ Emission Standard. In addition, six new energy powered bus routes connecting downtown Shanghai and World Expo Park is expected to open then.
In 2009 and 2010, Shanghai municipal government will spend 1.2 billion RMB (about USD 175 356 000) for its bus replacement project. In order to improve its public transport system, the government has decided to complete the project ahead of the Expo. It is revealed by the city’s public transport department that the procurement of new buses will invite bids nationwide and 4,000 new buses can be delivered in several batches. The procurement work is expected to be done by the end of this year. In early half of 2009 alone, 2,000 units of buses is going to be replaced. The remaining 2,000 units will be replaced before the opening of the Expo.
The new buses are required to be those equipped with diesel engines or powered by new energy and should meet National Ⅲ Emission Standard. The six new bus routes connecting downtown area and World Expo Park are likely to adopt gas-electric hybrid buses.
● Within the World Expo Park, the buses in service are required to be emission free. About 100 units of buses equipped with ultra-capacitors are expected to appear in the park. Currently, 20 buses of this type have already been put into service on Line 11 and Line 20 for trial operation.
● Shanghai Bus Xinxin Co. has 17 units of Sunwin branded buses equipped with ultra-capacitors. In 2009, the company is likely to buy another 20-plus unit of this type.
● The 4,000 unit bus replacement project will cover bus routes both in downtown and suburban areas of Shanghai.
● In 2009, Shanghai will focus on pushing forward the construction of public transport system in Chongming, Nanhui and Fengxian Districts, aiming at opening 70 new bus routes.
● Shanghai will set up state-owned public transport companies in its suburbs so as to create demand for new buses in the suburban lines. The “retired” buses in Shanghai’s urban area will not be reused on the city’s suburban lines.
