Densely populated, Xiamen island in Fujian Province has over 500,000 registered vehicles. Due to the high population concentration rate and large number of automobiles, how to solve such pollutants as vehicle emissions has long become a big headache for the local government. Currently, a new method that is gaining increasing attention is to popularize vehicles powered by Dimethyl Ether.
Dimethyl Ether is the organic compound with the formula CH3OCH3. The simplest ether, it is a colorless gas that is a useful precursor to other organic compounds and an aerosol propellant. Dimethyl ether is also promising as a clean-burning hydrocarbon fuel.
As early as May 2005, Shanghai Jiaotong University rolled out the first bus powered by Dimethyl Ether in China. The new bus model was put into trial service in Sept. 2007. Results show that the hybrid bus boasts a high fuel economy, reaching over 20% compared with the normal bus and reduces emissions by more than 35%. Given the new bus's encouraging features, it is advisable that it should be put into use in Xiamen Public Transport System as soon as possible.
Currently, National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), China's top economic planner, has approved the establishment of a state-level engineering laboratory, which will be chiefly engaged in research of production of alternative energies by utilizing coals as the raw materials. Now, Xiamen Kinglong, one of China's leading bus & coach builders, and Xiamen University are actively involved in research of production and transportation of Dimethyl Ether.
