Recently, some members of CPPCC from Beijing municipal government paid to visit to Beiqi Foton to review the development of new energy vehicles. During the tour, some member suggested fuel cell batteries should be standardized at the initial stage of development of electric vehicles so as to facilitate the construction of “battery recharging stations” in the future.

A staff from Beiqi Foton introduced an all-electric vehicle to the guests. According to him, the vehicle is priced at about RMB 140,000-RMB 160,000 (about USD 20,5223-USD 23,454) while the battery costs about RMB 90,000 (about USD 13,193). In the meantime, the vehicle can travel 150 km nonstop. However, it takes about six hours for the vehicle to get fully recharged and the first two hours can ensure the supply of 80% of energy needs for vehicle’s operation.

Currently, China’s new energy vehicle development is still at its infant stage. Almost all complete vehicle builders such as FAW, Dongfeng, Changan, Chery, Beiqi, Geely, and Brilliance have entered the R&D of the new type of vehicles. Thanks to the Popularization of 1,000 New Energy Vehicles for Each in 10 Cities Across the nation, a new incentive rolled out by the Ministry of Science and Technology, China will need for over 10,000 units new energy powered vehicles each year in the future.

After the tour, members of CPPCC called for more incentives to be given to boost the development of new energy vehicles. Given Beijing’s rich resources both in terms of intellects and capital, China should aim high and take a leap-frog development road so that the country can make some breakthroughs in the newly emerged sector.

In response to battery’s high price and inconvenience for recharging, some members also pointed out that vehicle building companies should focus themselves on producing vehicles while battery makers should manufacture standardized batteries so that the whole sector can be further boosted. Moreover, unnecessary environmental wastes and costs can be avoided.
