Affected by the economic crisis, the global automobile industry is facing a formidable challenge, which, for China's auto industry, means not only a challenge, but also a huge opportunity. We need to seize the chance and confront the challenge, persist in innovation, and improve the competitiveness of our products, so that we can achieve rapid and sustainable development of building up our own brands. 


We shall enhance independent innovation and firm the confidence of promoting self-owned brands of car companies in their gradual progress in achieving internationalization.

 


As the international economic downturn is spreading further into economic entities, the global automobile industry is facing a formidable challenge, which, for China's auto industry, means not only a challenge, but also a huge opportunity. On the one hand, the retreat of certain brands will inevitably leave more space in the market, especially in the foreign market, and China's domestic automobile brands are becoming qualified to enter into the international market in such aspects as product quality and after-sale service, for which the Brilliance Auto has provided strong evidence through its own endeavor. On the other hand, China's auto industry has a vast domestic market. Therefore, the prospects are promising for domestic brands of automobiles. We need to seize the chance and confront the challenge, persist in innovation, and improve the competitiveness of our products, so that we can achieve rapid and sustainable development of building up our own brands.

 


As a major leader of China's proprietary auto brands, Brilliance Auto always clings to the principle of "owning proprietary technologies and building self-owned brands through independent innovation", continually improving its R&D capability and striving for the sustainable development of the company. Although Brilliance Auto is not very big in terms of company scale, it has cumulated valuable experience in the development of domestic auto industry and proprietary brands, and has scored many firsts: the first in owning proprietary brands of commercial vehicles and passenger vehicles at the same time; taking the first position in the market share (over 50 percent) of the minibus market for 13 consecutive years; the first to develop 1.8T turbo-supercharged engine products that are top-rated internationally and domestically; the first to export passenger car into the international premium car market such as Germany, who is noted for its stringent requirements for the emission, safety and legal conditions of automobiles, marking a milestone  of the success of China's proprietary auto brands in exporting into international premium market.

 


Striving to be an internationalized auto company, Brilliance Auto has established long-term technical partnership with such multi-national enterprises as BMW, Porsche, Mira, Pininfarina, and Toyota. Besides, it is energetically exploring the oversea market. From 2004 to 2008, the Brilliance Auto Group exported a total of 50,743 sets of vehicles. This year, the Brilliance Group expects to export 40 thousand units of complete vehicles, and is planning to set up 6 oversea assembly plants in Malaysia, Thailand, Russia, Iran, and Brazil, so as to further its expansion in the foreign market. 

 


The first season of the 2009 has passed. Despite the impact of the international financial recession and the gloomy performance of the global auto industry, Brilliance Auto swims the adverse current and makes progress, struggling to actualize the plan of "3 MAINTENANCEs, 2 INNOVATIONs, and one IMPROVE", namely, to maintain growth through market expansion, to maintain profitability through broadening sources of income and reducing expenditure, to maintain operation through financing, to promote development through technology innovation, to promote changes  through managerial innovation, and to improve productivity at remarkable scale. The production and sale has started desirably, with sale of whole vehicle reaching 70,313 units during the first season, an improvement of 18 percent year on year. Among the achievements, the Brilliance brand scored a significant increase of 44.6 percent, while in the case of the Brilliance Junjie, demand exceeds supply.

 


Master the proprietary technologies; prepare a solid foundation for leapfrog development

 


Though the opportunity for development we are meeting is unprecedented, we are in the face of numerous difficulties. Objectively speaking, China's auto industry has many problems. It started rather late from low standard, with a huge structure and a weak foundation. It lacks the technological advantage, brand awareness and historic accumulation that are characteristics of internationally leading auto companies. It lagged significantly behind the advanced foreign auto community. Exteriorly speaking, with the foreign market gradually shrinking, foreign brands are coming into China one after another, making the competition in China's auto market more intensified. The Chinese proprietary brands are having tighter room for development. Speaking from the prospects of China's auto industry, it, on the one hand, is faced with a long-term project to build up the self-owned brands, which needs nurturing and gradual formation process to develop market awareness and reputation, while on the other hand, it lags behind joint-venture enterprises in such aspects as enterprise management, market exploration, products R&D, after-sales service, and cost management. To resolve these problems would require great effort from the enterprises. 

 


China's auto industry started rather later. What's imperative now is to improve independent R&D capability and possess core technologies. For many years, in order to forge self-owned brands with international competitiveness, Brilliance Auto has, on the one hand, been upholding the operation principle of "leading quality, before leading the world" and a development strategy of "Independent innovation at high standard; self-owned brands with high quality; leapfrog development with ambitious goals", and on the other hand, in terms of key elements designs and R&D , been taking the path of "owning not only intellects, but also proprietary rights" ,"cooperation in designs and tackling difficulties", absorbing the world's leading scientific technology and modern craftsmanship for our own use. Besides continual efforts in R&D, innovation, and improvement of complete vehicles, we also strive for the synchronous development of complete vehicle and car parts, and for the further upgrade of the automotive core technology-the engine. Besides, Brilliance Auto has also made desirable progress in such innovative technologies such as electricity-propelled vehicles, LNG vehicles and hybrid vehicles, preparing a solid foundation for future and sustainable development.   

 


Brilliance Auto will stick to the development strategy of focusing on both complete vehicles and car parts, and on both the domestic and the international markets. In the face of the challenges and the opportunities, Brilliance Auto has the resolution and the confidence to make contribution to the readjustment and vitalization of China's auto industry, and the rapid development of self-owned brands.
