English.chinabuses.com: dubbed as the “Father of Bus & Coach”, Mr. Luc Glorieux, ex-president of B.A.A.V, recently paid an eleven-day visit to China and toured ten well recognized bus & coach builders across the nation.
Mr. Luc gave a speech in Beijing during his tour in China
In our interview, Mr. Luc excitedly told our reporter that his visit has offered him a deeper understanding of the overall development of China’s bus & coach building industry. When asked about his impression about the enterprises he visited, he summed that China’s companies have modern and clean production facilities, state-of-art technologies and customized products.
While still amazed by the robust growth of the industry, Mr. Luc recalled that in 2000 when he first came to China, the bus & coach industry was still in its infant stage. However, in less than one decade, the industry has changed beyond recognition. He remarked that some well established Chinese bus builders do possess the formidable strengthen to rival with its European counterparts.
After recognizing the significant progress made by the industry, Mr. Luc also made some very insightful suggestions to the internationalization of China’s enterprises involved in this sector.
First, China’s bus builders still lag behind its European counterparts when it comes to the details of bus building, such as bus interior upholstery, according to Mr. Luc. Although these details do not require much advanced technologies, they sometimes play very decisive roles in customers decision-making. If a minor detail of a bus is not taken good care of, it is very much likely that it will give the customer a not-so-good impression. On the contrary, if China’s bus builders pay more attention to some small details, prospective international buyers will definitely be attracted by Chinese quality bus & coach products.
Second, Mr. Luc pointed out that China’s bus builders have been quite eager to enter the European market. Given its relatively small demand and the excessively high costs in entering it, it is advisable that China should shift more of its attention on the emerging markets, such as Central Asia, South America and Africa.
Third, Mr. Luc put forward that China’s bus builders desperately need to upgrade their overseas marketing and post-sale service network. To enter the international market, every Chinese bus builder has to bear in mind that the post-sale service is much more important than the sales volume itself. A relatively quick and cost-efficient way to expand overseas presence is to set up cooperative ties with global big players. He further gave examples of the partnership reached between Youngman Bus and Neoplan, Shanghai Sunwin and Volvo, which has quickly helped China’s bus builders extend their sales and post-sale service networks abroad.
At last, when asked about his opinion on development of new energy buses, Mr. Luc unequivocally expressed his firm belief that the fuel-efficient and eco-friendly buses are the way out to solve many environmental woes faced by all countries across the globe. He further pointed out that China’s has been actively involved in the emerging sector and has been making great achievements.
