English.chinabuses.com: A meeting on the future development of the National Changchun Hi-tech Development Zone (CHTDZ) took place on Tuesday with the aim of providing an additional boost to both the zone and the local economy.

Industrial layout plan of northern area

With a powerful belief in its ability to make a larger contribution to the nation as well as to Jilin and its capital, the zone has recently devised a far-reaching strategic plan, designed to establish the zone as an advanced global hi-tech industrial base as well as a powerful engine for economic development.

The National Changchun Hi-Tech Development Zone, founded in 1991, is one of the nation's leading hi-tech zones. Situated in Changchun, the capital of northeast China's Jilin province, the zone has unique access to the city's abundant intellectual resources, provided by numerous key universities and research institutes.

With considerable support from the central, provincial and municipal governments, the zone has developed at an extraordinary speed over the past 18 years and now ranks among the best of China's 53 national hi-tech zones.

The zone, which currently yields about half of the city's hi-tech production and one third of the city's industrial production, has become a major driving force for Changchun's economic and social development.

According to a new economic blueprint, which has already been approved by an official task force of seven experts, the zone will seek to establish five pivotal industries by 2020.

Yang Junliang, deputy secretary-general of the Changchun municipal government, said the city has currently only two leading industries - the auto industry and the agricultural products processing industry.

Looking to the future, he said: "The six leading industries cultivated in the hi-tech zone will greatly enhance the city's industrial structure and reflect the Concept of Scientific Development."

Sun Yaming, assistant mayor of Changchun and director of the Changchun Hi-tech Development Zone, said the plan, which centers on raising innovation ability, is aimed at building a dominant zone as part of Changchun's industrial upgrading, a concentrated business zone for Jilin province's hi-tech industries and a national model zone for independent innovation.

Sun said: "We will promote the zone's development by giving priority to key enterprises and major projects."

The six leading industries identified in the plan are equipments manufacturing, biomedicine, optical electronics, new materials & renewable energies, modern agricultural products processing and a hi-end service industry.
