VDL Hybrid CITEAS for Heag Mobilo Darmstadt

2011-09-15    Source:www.chinabuses.org
Summarize:HEAG Mobilo in Darmstadt is operating three VDL hybrid Citea buses. The hybrid Citeas are the result of the German ‘Green Move’ development project, a collaborative initiative of transport company HEAG mobilo, Darmstadt University of Technology, Vossloh Kiepe and VDL Bus & Coach. ‘Green Move’ was initiated as part of the German policy to give certain regions a role model for the application of electric mobility. Rhein-Main, with Darmstadt as one of the main cities, is such a model region.
www.chinabuses.org: HEAG Mobilo in Darmstadt is operating three VDL hybrid Citea buses.

The objective of the ‘Green Move’ development project is to utilise serial hybrid technology in such a way that maximum savings in fuel consumption will be achieved, compared with conventional diesel buses. Also the emission of CO2, particulates and NOx will be reduced.

The hybrid Citea SLF-120 Hybrid is using a serial hybrid electric drive, featuring a diesel engine which drives a generator that produces the electrical power, which is needed to power the driven rear axle. Part of the electrical power is stored in supercaps for later use – for example for driving away solely on electrical power from a bus stop. The braking energy is also recovered for this purpose, and stored in the same supercaps. During driving away from the bus stop and accelerating to cruising speed the diesel engine can be left shut off, producing zero emissions and noise.

The Citea SLF-120/hybrid buses for HEAG mobilo have been built with components from renowned automotive suppliers. Vossloh Kiepe serves as the system integrator with overall responsibility for the generator, supercaps, power electronics and energy management. The four cylinder EEV diesel engine is built by Cummins. The rear axle, developed by ZF, includes two electric motors, which are integrated into the axle. Though there is some additional weight due to the supercaps, batteries and electric driveline components, VDL has been able to restrict it to an absolute minimum.
