in Switzerland has reintroduced passenger trailers to increase the capacity of its buses. Called the XXL bus, it is equipped with a trailer that can be added or removed as necessary.
The basic bus has a length of 12 meter, which can be extended to 23 metres by adding a passenger trailer with a length of 11 metres, giving it a larger overall length which is larger than the overall length of an articulated bus.
It also offers internet access to passengers and is fully accessible to wheelchairs with its low easy access floor, making it very user-friendly. The trailer can be added or removed in a few minutes, says manufacturer Hess. The capacity of the bus can be adjusted according to the expected demand, preventing running empty in off-peak hours and consume more fuel than necessary.
The trailer will mainly be used during peak hours in the morning and afternoon, mainly for school transport. If this experiment succeeds, PostBus could extend this concept to other intercity bus lines where the amount of passengers fluctuates during the day.
