www.chinabuses.org :On March 9th, 2013, reporter learnt from the Beijing Public Transport Holdings Ltd (BPT), that in order to meet the requirement of the narrow roads as well as ‘bus for the last kilometer’, BPT will launch the mini bus for the first time. Comparing with the big bus of more than 10 meters, the mini bus will be 8 meters long. This is the first time in round 20 years that the bus gets smaller in volume.
According to the introduction by the person in charge in BPT, in the past 5 years, rail transit has grown increasingly convenient, and the travelling demand concentrates on commuting between community and subway station. Weakness of ‘big bus’ gradually appears, as it is difficult to make turnings or reach the gate of community for big buses when the roads are narrow. Residents has no options but walking or taking unlicensed taxis.
The person in charge also expressed that mini bus has bigger capacity than minivan. As calculated, mini bus has a quarter less capacity than ordinary bus, but, owing to the compact body, it runs more freely on narrow roads, thus, more than double the turnover rate, which means reducing the waiting time by half for passengers. The development work of the bus is already underway, and the bus is scheduled for debut in June at the earliest.
