Citaro NGT: even quieter and more clean thanks to its gas engine
Quiet running and reduced CO2 emissions, low weight and an impressive passenger capacity, strong power delivery and low fuel consumption, as well as long maintenance intervals – the Mercedes-Benz Citaro NGT with M 936 G natural-gas engine celebrates its IAA premiere. It offers clear benefits for driving in heavily frequented inner cities.
Citaro NGT
The compact and light natural-gas engine with 7.7 l displacement performs like a diesel engine and simultaneously sets milestones in terms of noise and pollutant emissions. The turbo-charged engine is based on the highly modern OM 936 turbodiesel engine. The vertically-installed six-cylinder monovalent engine runs on compressed natural gas. It has an output of 222 kW (302 hp) and delivers a peak torque of 1200 Nm consistently between 1200 and 1600 rpm. To some extent, the natural gas engine undercuts the Euro VI emissions limits by a considerable margin. Power transmission is handled by means of an automatic transmission equipped with a torque converter.
The newly developed gas tanks can be found under a cover on the roof. The tanks are made of a composite material with a plastic core and are coated with carbon fibre and glass fibre layers. This combination of materials is both light and highly robust.
Mercedes-Benz Bus Presented at IAA 2016
The new gas bottles and the compact engine both serve to lower the additional weight inherent of the Citaro NGT concept when compared with diesel-driven variants. This stands at around 485 kg in the case of a rigid vehicle. Equipped with the standard equipment, the Citaro NGT rigid bus can therefore carry up to 96 passengers, whilst the Citaro G NGT articulated bus can carry 153 passengers.
Mercedes-Benz Future Bus at IAA 2016
Mercedes-Benz offers the gas-powered bus as a Citaro NGT rigid bus and as a Citaro G NGT articulated bus. The Citaro NGT can be operated on natural gas or on organic natural gas – in the latter case, driving the vehicle is virtually CO2-neutral. The arguments in favour of the Citaro NGT are really impressive: we have already received three-figure orders of vehicles from Madrid and Augsburg.
Mercedes-Benz minibuses: more powerful engines, higher weights, new equipment
The Mercedes-Benz minibus programme profits from the further development of the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter which serves as the basis for the vehicles. The lower power ratings are now significantly more dynamic. The entry-level engine now has an output of 84 kW (114 hp) and attains a torque figure of 300 Nm – this corresponds to an increase of 20 percent in each case. Both of the parameters of the next power stage with its 105 kW (143 hp) output and 330 Nm of torque are around ten percent greater.
What's more, Mercedes-Benz has extended the Sprinter product range with the addition of an ex factory Sprinter featuring a permissible gross vehicle weight of 5.5 t. For the mid-range weight variants of the Sprinter Mobility, Sprinter Transfer and Sprinter Travel minibus model series, the maximum payload is therefore increased by around 150 kg.
Bus-specific innovations have also been added to the minibus programme: the Sprinter City 65 vehicle exhibited has a new, weight-optimised retarder which, despite offering the same functionality and braking performance, now weighs 15 percent less than the previous version. Equally new is its combined pushchair and wheelchair space, which will be a compulsory component for urban regular-service buses as of 1 July 2017.
Sprinter City 65
The exhibited vehicle also features impressive connectivity equipment, video surveillance of the passenger compartment and a computer-supported operational control system at the entrances with generously dimensioned central monitor for displaying route information. Meanwhile, destination and passenger management are also as much a part of the system as a Wi-Fi media router and USB connections on all seats.
The weight-optimised M1 minibuses from the Sprinter Mobility model series will be released in the second half of the year. The use of innovative composite materials in the airline floor rail system means payload increases of up to 35 kg, depending on the model. Increased ease of access and the omission of an extendible step on the front passenger door makes a new, lowered entry possible, which is optionally available for the Sprinter Mobility, Sprinter Transfer and Sprinter Travel model series.
Solaris unveiled further vehicles of their new-generation at IAA 2016
New Solaris Urbino 12 Hybrid
On display during the IAA fair, the hybrid novelty fresh off Solaris’ gate is equipped with a serial hybrid drive by U.S. producer BAE Systems – the HybriDrive. This technology is based on an electric engine fuelled with power from a power storage facility. This, in turn is charged with the help of a generator using a low-capacity Cummins diesel engine (a 210 HP Cummins ISB4.5E6). This environmental-friendly, partially electric drive allows to significantly reduce fuel consumption and pollutant emission into the atmosphere.
The new hybrid Urbino 12 Solaris offers also the possibility to install a Start/Stop system, which allows to completely turn off the diesel engine during stopovers and which allows to leave it in zero-emission mode. Furthermore customers can opt for an Arrive-and-Go system which additionally turns off the diesel engine when the bus is approaching a stop. Thanks to those solutions the hybrid bus of Solaris resembles an electric bus in functionality and according to various tests it is able to save up to 20 percent of the fuel needed by similar vehicles with a conventional drive. And to top it off, the engine is so quiet that the noise level can be reduced significantly, which comes in handy in particular in overcrowded city centres. The vehicle presented during the IAA is equipped with 11.6 kWh batteries. Soon two more energy-storing options will be on offer: 0.82 kWh super-condensers and 31.8 kWh lithium-ion batteries.
The new Solaris Urbino 12 CNG
The drive unit of the new Urbino 12 CNG is a Cummins ISLG engine producing 320 horsepower and meeting the Euro6 norm, and in the presented vehicle it is coupled with a VOITH Diwa6 gearbox. What is new about this model is the installation of a CNG cylinder. Five composite tanks are fitted alongside rather than crosswise on the roof, as had been the case in the former Urbino version. The new gas tank construction technology allows to reduce the weight by up to 80 kilograms depending on the configuration. What is more, thanks to locating it alongside the bus, it was possible to reduce the number of cylinder valves. The model presented at the fair boasts gas tanks of a volume of 1575 l. The producer offers also bigger cylinders, containing 1875 litres, or smaller, 1260-litre ones. Thanks to this option the bus can be tailor-made to the needs of carriers.
The new gas-fuelled Solaris of the new generation has a gas filler valve in the same spot as the diesel engine counterpart has its filling unit. That is why neither the seat layout, nor the interior of the gas-fuelled bus, nor even the layout of the driver’s compartment have been changed compared to diesel buses. Just like in other models of the new generation Solaris, the gas bus stands out thanks to its spacious and bright interior, where modern solutions already known from other Solaris vehicles have been used, such as LED lighting, efficient air-conditioning or USB chargers, which make the journey by this bus extremely comfortable. The bus contains 33 seats, 16 of which are accessible from the low floor.
Bus of the Year 2017 – the new Solaris Urbino 12 electric
The battery-powered Solaris Urbino which has been named best city bus of the year 2017 is also presented in Hanover. The innovative electric bus had its world premiere at Busworld exhibition in 2015. The vehicle presented at IAA 2016 is equipped with Solaris high energy batteries which deliver 240 kWh and comply with the most rigorous safety standards. The set has been divided into six separate packs of 40 kWh each. 160 kWh are located at the rear of the vehicle, while the rest is mounted on the roof, over the first axle. The new Urbino 12 electric has been fitted with an innovative pantograph charging system. 450 kW power allows for a quick recharge of the batteries on route. A traditional plug-in connection has also been provided and can be used for overnight charging at the depot.
Bus of the Year 2017
Emission-free and clean, the electric bus in Solaris’s new design constitutes the most innovative item in the Solaris portfolio. The benefits of the new Solaris construction such as light and rigid bodyframe, skin-on-skin panels assembly as well as ergonomic, spacious interior in combination with an exquisitely quiet and clean motor result in this extraordinary vehicle.
The new 12-metre Urbino electric is fitted with the electric drive axle with axle-mounted motors, 125 kW maximum power each. This concept frees up space for passengers and significantly reduces the weight of the vehicle. Thanks to the high-class electric equipment and the electric axle the drive is exceptionally quiet, smooth and devoid of vibrations. This is exactly why Solaris’s battery-powered bus is a perfect solution in the modern city environment, providing a positive travel experience even with large numbers of standing passengers on board.

An Urbanway Electric Hybrid ZEV mode city bus provides a shuttle service within the IAA exhibition park. This 12m Zero Emission Vehicle is part of the experimental EBSF 2 project (European Bus System of the Future) managed by the UITP. The specific management of energy strategies and auxiliaries results in an autonomy that can reach 4 km in full electric mode.
The Daily Electric, a "zero emission” minibus, ideal for city centers and shuttle services. It offers 100 or 160 km battery life with two or three high-density sodium-nickel-chloride batteries respectively combined with high-power supercapacitors that improve vehicle performance and battery life. The regenerative braking system recovers kinetic energy and converts it into electricity to charge the traction batteries. The flexible charging mode, patented by Iveco, consists of an electric plug and a single connector that can charge from a domestic socket in 24 hours, or a public or private socket in 10 hours, or at a public fast-charge station in 2 hours.
Iveco Daily Electric
A Daily Tourys Hi-Matic is available for test driving on the outside track. This high luxury minibus is an excellent fit with the Iveco Bus range of touring coaches. It features 19 seats, a 2.5 m3 luggage section at the rear, a rear pneumatic suspension, air conditioning, a multimedia audiovisual installation and the 8-speed Hi-Matic automatic gearbox that is designed to provide maximum performance at low operating costs, whilst offering unrivalled comfort, easier gear shifting and reduced fuel consumption.
The energy transition is a reality at Iveco Bus. For the first time ever, more than 50% of the city buses produced at the Iveco Bus plant in Annonay (France) in 2015 were not diesel but CNG and full hybrid electric. This equates to 10 tonnes of fine particulates, 100 tonnes of NOx (nitrogen oxides) and 10,000 tonnes of CO2 (carbon dioxide) not released into the atmosphere.
This success demonstrates that Iveco Bus has been able to anticipate the constantly growing demands from local authorities and operators - and from the general public - for clean buses that are more respectful of natural resources, the environment and public health.
