www.chinabuses.org: On October 19, a panel of experts from both home and abroad, who just attended 2016 China International Bi-Power Trolley Bus Technology Innovation Conference & 25th UITP-TBC Annual Meeting, arrived in Beijing and visited Liufang Bus Station, Beijing Public Transport Group Trolley Bus Branch. By visiting the world’s largest bus operator, these experts all hope to gain a deeper understanding of the operation of the bi-power trolley buses jointly rolled out by Foton AUV and Microvast.

After arriving at the bus station, all the experts showed much curiosity about the vehicles. Mr. Yang, Head of Beijing Public Transport Group Trolley Bus Branch answered all their questions. He pointed out that Foton AUV bi-power trolley bus boasts zero emission standards and high energy efficiency. Moreover, it generates little noise and can start up and accelerate in a fast manner. On roads with heavy traffics, the vehicle still makes full use of energy and provides passengers with unparalleled travel comforts. It fully meets the requirements in our modern society for a low-carbon lifestyle and a more environmentally friendly transportation mode.
Bi-power trolley bus has double power sources: one is from power batteries and the other is from power supply networks. Thanks to the latter, the bus is no longer faced with the challenge for long recharging time and troublesome battery replacement. Moreover, construction of recharging posts becomes totally unnecessary, which helps bus operators save a large amount of costs. To date, Beijing has accumulated rich experience in operating trolley buses. Compared with that of fossil-fuel powered vehicles, the operation of trolley buses is much easier.

It is also worth noting that the battery storage on Foton AUV’s bi-power trolley buses is much smaller and this helps the bus maker cut their costs significantly. Microvast fast-recharging batteries boast a similarly long life-expectancy as the bus, on which they are mounted. Thus, Foton AUV bi-power trolley buses achieve high performance-price ratio.
As of 2013, Beijing Public Transport Group Trolley Bus Branch had set up 15 trolley bus lines with a total operation distance of 200.88 km. Its trolley bus fleet reached 588 units. On each day, these buses travel a combined distance of 76,000 km and provide transportation services for 330,000 passengers.
Compared with new energy vehicle stars like electric buses and hybrid buses, bi-power trolley buses have formed their own competitive edges. First, they have become less dependent on non-renewable resources, such as natural gas and oil. Second, they do not require the large-scale construction of recharging posts. Third, they achieve higher energy efficiency. Fourth, their production cost is lower and their weight is lighter. Fifth, they generate much less pollution while in the process of production and recycling. Statistics show that Foton AUV bi-power trolley bus is able to cut the emission of carbon dioxide by 125 kg and fuel costs by 125,700 RMB each year when compared with a normal air-conditioned 11-meter city bus.
Just winning a bid for 286 units trolley buses in Beijing, Foton AUV expects that more bi-power trolley buses will hit the roads in the capital in the coming years as the city is planning to increase the number of its bus route lines with bi-power trolley buses to 33.
Apart from Beijing, nine other cities in China also have their own trolley bus lines. Across the world, 62 cities have trolley buses in operation. With state-of-art technologies, bi-power trolley buses have provided a new way out for urban pollution and other related ailments.
Since its establishment, UITP has always been committed to spreading the state-of-art technologies and innovative ideas in the public transport area. Its visit to Beijing Public Transport Group fully indicates its recognition of Foton AUV’s bi-power trolley buses.
