Despite the overall decline of the sales of new energy buses in 2017, BYD still maintained a fast growing momentum against the trend. For the whole year, the company sold 14,336 units electric buses (including 1,559 units made by GAC BYD), up by 8% year on year.

Specifically, the sales volume of its eight-meter electric buses reached 14,254 units, up by 13.6% year on year, accounting for 99% of its total sales; the sales volume of its electric buses measuring ten-meters in length and above stood at 12,228 units, up by 14.5% year on year, accounting for 85% of its total sales. In addition, BYD ranked the first place among all other players in the sales of new energy buses in 2017.

In 2017, BYD strengthened its market presence and further solidified its position in the market by expanding to even more cities across China. In the field of electric large-sized buses in particular, BYD has remained in the first place for four consecutive years, becoming an indisputable leader in the global new energy bus market.

According to the company, its huge success in 2017 can be chiefly attributed to two factors. First, the company has further diversified its product line. Second, it has developed several key technologies for new energy vehicles.

With impressive achievements in such areas as IT, automobile, new energy and rail transport, BYD is the only enterprise in China which has fully mastered the technologies for batteries, electric motors, electric controls, whole vehicle manufacturing, and recharging facilities. In December, 2017, BYD won China Auto Industry Preeminent Science and Technology Award for its great contribution to the promotion of advanced technologies for the new energy vehicle industry.

To ensure the highest quality of its electric vehicles, BYD adopts aluminum alloy body structure with a much lower body weight, wheel-hub driving system, power battery heat management system, renewable braking system and smart keying system. Moreover, it endures a wide range of temperatures and can work smoothly in high altitudes. Wither a longer lifespan and easier maintenance and repair, BYD electric vehicles are widely applicable and are readily adaptable to various urban transport needs in China.

Also in 2017, BYD electric buses successfully made its way to Xinjiang and Tibet, where they have well stood the test of the demanding terrains and harsh weather conditions. Besides, they delivered impressive performances in their power systems, battery management and continuous driving capability, pushing the manufacturing technology of China’s new energy buses to a new historical height.

In December, 2017, 350 units BYD electric city buses were officially put into operation in Beijing, marking a new milestone for the company. In the same month, the number of BYD electric buses in operation in Shenzhen reached 16,359 units, helping the city enormously build its greener urban public transport system. With such a formidable presence of BYD electric buses, Shenzhen has also become the pilot cities in the world in promoting electric city buses.

In the overseas market, LA Metro, one of the largest bus operators in the USA bought 60 units BYD electric city buses with a total value of 44.96 million USD, the largest electric bus order in US history. LA is aiming to have all its buses powered by electricity in 2030. IN addition, 23 units BYD electric city buses started operation in Turin and Novara in Italy, becoming the largest electric bus fleet in the country.

In Australia, the first batch of BYD electric buses has helped its operator Carbridge cut its fuel costs and maintenance costs significantly. For this reason, the operator purchased 40 more units BYD electric buses in 2017 to meet the increasing demands. In Okinawa Japan, the ten units BYD K9 electric city buses bought by Ships Agency officially started their operation in December last year. The company is now planning to increase its BYD electric bus fleet to 80 units.

As the first enterprise in the world calling for electricity powered urban public transport, BYD has so far delivered over 35,000 units electric buses to its customers across the world. Making big strides in the global market, the company is providing Chinese solutions for future public transport and helping cities build more sustainable public transport systems.(www.chinabuses.org)
