Fuel Cell Vehicles in Operation in China Reached 8,198 Units

According to the latest statistics released by China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM), the number of fuel cell vehicles in operation in China had reached 10,700 units by the end of 2021. From January to April this year, China’s production and sales volume of fuel cell vehicles reached 1,034 units and 832 units respectively, up by 640% and 340% year on year respectively.

In Dec., 2021, China’s Ministry of Finance, etc. made an announcement. According to it, by 2025, China will establish five city clusters (Jing-Jin-Ji, Shanghai, Guangdong, Hebei and Henan) for the demonstration operation of fuel cell vehicles.

As of April 30, 2022, China had registered 8,198 units fuel cell vehicles in operation, including 4,241 units fuel cell  buses (51.73%), 3,945 units fuel cell logistic vehicles, engineering vehicles and sanitation vehicles (48.12%) and 12 units fuel cell  passenger vehicles (0.15%). The number of fuel cell vehicles in operation in the five city clusters reached 5,853 units, accounting for 71.40% of the country’s total.

More specifically, Guangdong had 2,604 units fuel cell vehicles in operation (1,049 units buses and 1,555 units special vehicles); Shanghai had 1,512 units fuel cell vehicles in operation (376 units buses and 1,133 units special vehicles); Jing-Jin-Ji had 939 units fuel cell vehicles in operation (705 units buses and 232 units special vehicles); Hebei and Henan had 480 units and 318 units fuel cell vehicles in operation respectively and they had 444 units and 318 units fuel cell buses in operation respectively. The total mileage of the fuel cell vehicles in operation in the five city clusters had reached 163,791,000 with the total operation hour standing at 6,325,900 hours.

Jing-Jin-Ji has specifically pointed out that 5,300 units fuel cell vehicles will be put into operation and no less than 49 new hydrogen refill stations will be built; Shanghai is committed to putting 5,000 units (3,400 units trucks, 1,400 units passenger vehicles and 200 units buses) in operation; Guangdong has revealed that it will strive to introduce 10,000 units fuel cell vehicles in operation and build about 200 new hydrogen refill stations; Hebei has also indicated that it will put 7,710 units fuel cell vehicles in operation in the next four years.

According to a plan jointly released by China’s National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) and China’s Ministry of Energy, China aims to increase the total number of fuel cell vehicles in operation to about 50,000 units in 2025. With an annual hydrogen production capacity of 100,000 tons - 200,000 tons, China is fully committed to cut the emissions of carbon dioxide by 1 million-2 million tons each year.
