Moscow is rapidly transforming its public transportation system as part of its commitment to sustainable development. This year, the capital expanded its network of green transport routes and launched it in new districts.
Since the beginning of the year, for the first time electric buses have started running routes in 15 districts of Moscow and Podolsk, including directions to Vnukovo Airport, Severnoye Butovo and Vykhino-Zhulebino. Travel to important social facilities and rail frame stations has become more accessible and comfortable for residents and guests of the city. Currently, electric buses account for more than 30 % of the Mosgortrans surface urban transport fleet. More than 2200 modern electric buses operate 170 Moscow routes.
“Thanks to infrastructure development, modern Russian-made electric buses have entered 60 more routes this year. This has increased the quality of passenger service and improved the environmental situation in the capital. On the instructions of Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin, we are actively expanding the network of electric bus routes and launching innovative vehicles throughout the city,” - said Maksim Liksutov, the Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Transport and Industry.
The main advantages of electric buses are a significant reduction in carbon dioxide emissions and a high level of passenger comfort due to smooth running.
According to the Department of Natural Resources, replacing diesel buses with electric buses has a positive impact on the city's ecology. For instance, replacing one diesel bus with an electric bus reduces carbon dioxide emissions by more than 60 tons per year. From 2018 to 2023, the development of electric transport has helped avoid the emission of 130 000 tons of CO2 equivalent greenhouse gases. Additionally, air pollution near highways has decreased by up to 2.5 times for certain pollutants compared to 2010.
To support the operation and development of environmentally friendly transport, more than 90 ultra-fast charging stations for electric buses were installed in Moscow this year. They operate in a wide temperature range (-40 to +40 C) and are suitable for all electric bus models.
“Moscow is a leader in the number of electric vehicles in Europe. Thanks to the construction of infrastructure, we can launch electric bus routes in different parts of the city. In total, there are already almost 350 charging stations for electric buses in the capital. We continue the development of environmentally friendly transport according to the task of the Mayor of Moscow Sergey Sobyanin”, - added Maksim Liksutov.
